Costa Mesa, CA – Costa Mesa Police Officer Oscar Reyes died after suffering a “medical emergency” at his residence on Sep. 12, according to his department.

Officer Reyes, 43, had spent the day participating in the Orange County Traffic Officers Association Motor Rodeo, Costa Mesa Police Chief Rob Sharpnack said in a Facebook post.

During the event, Officer Reyes participated in multiple difficult skills and training competitions, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

“In the evening, while at home, Officer Reyes suffered a medical emergency and was transported to a nearby hospital where he passed away,” Chief Sharpnack said. “Our Department extends their condolences to his family as we also grieve this tremendous loss.”

The 13-year veteran of the department had spent the past decade serving as a motorcycle officer with the traffic division, the chief said.

For the last five years, he was a motors trainer.

In 2012, Officer Reyes was recognized for having made over 100 DUI arrests during the course of a year, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving also honored him with the Century Award earlier the same year.

“Officer Reyes was a loyal public servant,” Chief Sharpnack told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday. “He was truly passionate about our chosen profession and committed to traffic safety in our community.”

“He was our brother, our friend, a great father and a husband,” the chief continued. “As a tight-knit department, we are devastated and feeling the grave and sudden loss of our brother.”

On Thursday morning, Newport Beach police patrolled the Costa Mesa community to give the local officers time to grieve, KTLA reported.

“We’d like to thank our law enforcement community for their logistical aid tonight and show of support during this difficult time,” Chief Sharpnack told the Los Angeles Times.

Officer Reyes was a married father of three children, ages 15, 14, and 10, according to the Costa Mesa Police Association (CMPA) website.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own… He leaves behind a beautiful family,” the CMPA said in a Facebook post announcing a fundraiser to help the fallen hero’s widow and children.

Officer Reyes will be laid to rest on Friday, the department said in a Facebook post.
