Elk Grove, CA – California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Sean Poore died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his patrol car on Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Poore, 31, was based out of the CHP’s South Sacramento Division, KOVR reported.

His body was found inside his patrol vehicle on Lambert Road, beneath an interstate overpass, at approximately 5:30 p.m., according to The Sacramento Bee.

He was on duty at the time, and the circumstances of the incident remain under investigation, CHP Captain Evan Robinson said in a news release.

“Law enforcement agencies are traumatized with the death of one of their own,” CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said in the release. “The response is even more devastating when that death comes at the officer’s own hand.”

“Our hearts and prayers are with the surviving family members, friends, and co-workers,” the news release read, according to KOVR.

Officer Poore, a nine-year veteran of the department, also served in the Capitol Protection Section, Solano County, Marin County, and at the academy, the Sacramento Bee reported.
