Chicago, IL – 28-year-old Chicago PD Officer Samuel Jimenez was murdered Monday evening while responding to an active shooter at Mercy Hospital.

The incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. as a female doctor got into a verbal altercation her former fiance in the hospital parking lot, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.

A friend of the doctor was in the area and attempted to intervene in the verbal dispute.

The suspect then displayed a handgun and the friend fled into the hospital.

911 then received a calls for an assault and shots fired at the hospital. Witnesses said that the man fatally shot his former fiance.

“Then once she fell to the ground, he stood over her and shot her three more times,” a witness said, according to WFLD.

Officers arrived, and the suspect opened fire on them.

The gunfire struck the patrol cars and then the suspect fled into the hospital and officers pursued.

Officers engaged the suspect in a gunfight in the hospital which lasted for several minutes. During gunfight, a female pharmaceutical assistant was fatally shot and Officer Jimenez mortally wounded by a gunshot.

The shooter was fatally shot in the gunfight, but it’s not clear at this time if he was shot by police or if he shot himself.

Officer Jimenez later succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

The officer started in 2017, had just gotten off of his probationary period, and was assigned to the 2nd District.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.
