Broomfield, CO – Broomfield Police Department (BPD) Officer Brenda Sorrels, 47, was found dead at her home on Feb. 27, from an apparent suicide.

“With great sadness I’m announcing the death of [Officer] Brenda Sorrels,” Kurt Jordan posted on Instagram on Mar. 1. “She was a Broomfield Police Officer for many years and last month received a unit commendation for her work with the alcohol team.”

“She had recently lost her mother and was very depressed,” Jordan wrote. “She committed suicide yesterday. Prayers for her family and friends.”

Kristin Wichlacz, also expressed her condolences to Officer Sorrels.

“You will be greatly missed and you’ve impacted so many lives,” Wichlacz wrote.

Officer Sorrels, an 18-year-veteran of the BPD, began her career in 2000 as a community service officer, according to her obituary.

She started working as a detention officer for the department in 2001, and ultimately accepted a position as a police officer in 2005.

“As an officer, Brenda effortlessly connected to any troubled teen,” her obituary read. “She would reach out to any stranger that was struggling with life. The members of the Broomfield Police Department quickly became a family born not from a blood line, instead bonded by the thin blue line.”

Officer Sorrels graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2016, while she continued to serve as a full-time law enforcement officer.

“Brenda had a huge heart,” her obituary read. “She considered her friends to be her family.”

Officer Sorrels is survived by her sister, Pam Soren, as well as a multitude of friends.

“Brenda will be remembered for her ability to push boundaries, doing everything on her terms, and the ability to make everyone cringe and laugh all at the same time,” according to her obituary.
