Mount Pleasant, MI – Police are searching for a man who opened fire at a Central Michigan University (CMU) dorm on Friday, killing two people.
Bellwood Police Department Officer James Eric Davis, Sr., 48, and his wife, Diva Davis, were fatally shot on the fourth floor of Campbell Hall by their son, 19-year-old CMU sophomore James Eric Davis Jr., WDIV reported.
Police initially listed him as a person of interest, but officially labeled him as a suspect at a midday press conference.
According to WILX, police said that they had taken Davis Jr. to the hospital late Thursday night, due to a drug-related issue.
“It could have been an overdose or bad reaction to drugs and at that point was released to the hospital staff,” CMU Police Department public information Officer Jeff Brown told Newsweek.
He was treated, and was released from the hospital on Friday morning, CMU Police Lieutenant Larry Klaus told the Lansing Journal.
When Officer Davis and his wife came to campus to pick their son up for spring break a short while later, they were fatally shot, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Police said that Davis Jr., who is still at large, should be considered armed and dangerous.
Surveillance cameras at the dorm exits and common area showed Davis Jr. as he left the building and ran north along a set of railroad tracks. Investigators recovered pieces of clothing along his suspected route.
Davis Jr. was described as a black male who weighs 135 pounds and stands approximately five foot 10 inches tall. He was last seen wearing mustard colored jeans and a blue hoodie, The Detroit Free Press reported.
“He was wearing a dark hoodie, but it is unknown what clothing he is wearing now as different articles of clothing on the railroad grid,” Lt. Klaus said, according to Newsweek.
A robo call was sent out to students and school faculty at approximately 9:30 a.m., advising them of a lockdown.
All classes at the university were canceled for the day, as over 100 law enforcement officers fanned out across the community to search for the shooter, WILX reported.
The shooting reportedly “started from a domestic situation,” WILX reported.
CMU’s spring break began after school on Friday, and many students had already left the campus prior to the double homicide. School officials requested everyone stay away from CMU until further notice, and that anyone who planned to travel to the campus to pick up students meet at a nearby Comfort Inn, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Bellwood Police Department Officer James Eric Davis, Sr., both blood and blue. Godspeed, we will take the watch from here.
