Bushwick, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Rachel Bocatija, 24, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Feb. 27.

Officer Bocatija’s unnamed sister became concerned when she was unable to reach her by phone, and went to their family home, the New York Daily News reported.

She noticed the officer’s vehicle outside, and found Officer Bocatija’s body in a locked room in the residence at approximately 12:30 p.m.

A neighbor said that the officer had gotten into an argument with her father about moving out of the home shortly before she committed suicide.

Officer Bocatija began working for the NYPD in 2016.

“The day she graduated, everybody was celebrating,” her neighbor recalled. “It was really nice.”

Officer Bocatija was the third NYPD officer to commit suicide this year, Commissioner James O’Neill said in a YouTube video on Thursday.

“Your job requires that you spend your day helping others. But before you can take care of anyone else, you must first take care of yourself, so please, remember, if you need it, help is here, and help is available,” Commissioner O’Neill said.

The NYPD also works with the Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance, a support network that offers help to past and present officers who are struggling with substance abuse, suicide, post-traumatic stress disorder, and marital discord, the New York Daily News reported.

“We agree, in an ideal world, seeking out help is never a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of great strength,” Commissioner O’Neill said. “If you are having a problem of any kind, please contact the services offered inside and outside the department — because you never have to shoulder your burden alone.”

Officer Bocatija was laid to rest on Monday morning, QNS reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York Police Department Officer Rachel Bocatija, both blood and blue. Godspeed, we will take the watch from here.

Thank you for your service.
