Green River, WY – A hero truck driver saved the life of a Wyoming State Trooper on Thursday after jumping into a roadside fight.

The incident started as Darren Phillips was driving his truck down I-80 near Green River, according to KSL.

Phillips was driving east when he saw a Wyoming State Trooper and Dustin Roberts, 36, in a ground fight.

The trucker saw the trooper on his back with Roberts on top of him, and Roberts was grabbing the trooper’s gun.

Rather than call for help, Phillips knew that he needed to stop and take care of business himself. He stopped his truck in the passing lane and got out to assist.

“I put my brakes on, and I jump out and by this time, the trooper is on his back and the guy is on top of him. The trooper saw me running over and as soon as I got up to him, he says, ‘He’s going for my gun.,” Phillips told KSL. “So I just came around behind him and just reached around and put my arm right there and I held it with my other hand and I stood up and I just went back. And as I came back, he just came back with me and just fell right on top of me.”

Thanks to Phillips’ choke hold, the trooper was able to take Roberts into custody.

“I spent 12 years in the Marine Corps and 14 years with the Utah Army National Guard,” Phillips told KSL. “I did two tours in Iraq, and I never had to put a choke hold on anyone.”

The trooper only sustained minor injuries in what could have been a fatal fight.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Ben Schlosser said that Phillips is a hero, and things could have been much worse if Roberts was able to get the trooper’s gun.

Troopers found 74 pounds of marijuana and cocaine in Roberts’ vehicle, and he has been booked into jail, according to Deseret News.

“I was just happy to be in the right place at the right time,” Phillips told KSL. “Anything I can do for those guys who put their life on the line every day for us, I’ll do any time.”
