YouTuber Avoids Jail After Conviction For Having Sex With 12 Year Old

Jeff Nonan Calica, who was 19 at the time, admitted to having sex three times in a middle school parking lot.

Solana Beach, CA – A now-20-year-old man who admitted to having sex with a then-12-year-old girl, was sentenced Monday, Dec. 18 to probation only.

Jeff Nonan Calica, of Ventura County, was sentenced to probation by Vista Superior Court Judge Michael Washington, who also ordered him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

If Calica violates his probation, he could serve three years in prison, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The sentence is part of a plea deal that Calica agreed to when he pleaded guilty in October to one count of committing a lewd and lascivious act with a child under the age of 14.

Imprisonment would not be imposed on Calica unless he violates the terms of his agreement, which include staying away from social media sites where minors are the primary users.

Police said that the child learned of Calica through his YouTube channel. She reached out and the two began communicating online. Eventually, Calica drove to Solana Beach three times to meet up with the girl in her middle school parking lot in late 2016 and early 2017.

The child later disclosed what happened to her mother after her mother confronted her.

The victim’s mother wrote a letter to the court for Monday’s sentencing. She said the defendant’s actions have “turned our lives upside down and caused a happy little girl’s life to be ripped out from under her feet and put into a tailspin of depression, isolation and bitterness.”

“Giving Jeff probation is not punishment. It’s like giving a child a time out with no severe consequences,” she said.

Prosecutor Meredith Claterbos said that the parties met and agreed on a sentence that all sides found to be “appropriate.” Calica pleaded guilty, and as a result, the child did not have to testify.

The victim’s family has filed a civil suit against both Calica and the San Dieguito Union High School District.

Calica did not make a statement during his sentencing at the advice of his defense attorney, Elliot Jung.
