AndrewBlakeSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada – Police used a three-year-old Facebook photo posted by the murderer posing with her friend she would kill just hours later as key evidence because the belt the woman wore was the murder weapon.
Cheyenne Antoine, 21, pleaded guilty Jan. 15 to manslaughter in the killing of 18-year-old Brittney Gargol and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to CBC News.
Police said the Facebook post was vital evidence because Rose was wearing the belt police say was the murder weapon.
The belt was found next to Gargol’s body where she was dumped at a landfill on March 25, 2015.
Antoine described Gargol as her best friend and said the two had been out drinking the night that Gargol died. Antoine said the two argued but she didn’t remember strangling Gargol to death. But Antoine didn’t dispute she killed her, according to CBC News.
Police said the investigation took nearly three years to complete. When the Facebook photo was discovered by police, they noticed the belt matched the one found next to Gargol’s body. That made Antoine a suspect, CBC News reported.
The police said that Antoine used social media to try to mislead police. Several hours after Antoine had killed Gargol, she posted on Facebook asking where her friend was. Antoine also told police the pair went to several bars and that Gargol met a man and left with him, CBC News reported.
Police received a tip that led to a witness that told them Antoine confessed that she had killed Gargol.
Lisa Watson, Antoine’s lawyer, said her client doesn’t remember killing her friend, CBC News reported.
Antoine issued a statement through her lawyer.
“I will never forgive myself. Nothing I say or do will ever bring her back. I am very, very sorry… It shouldn’t have ever happened,” she said.
