Tom GantertRushville, IL – A 45-year-old woman was charged with spiking the sports drink of an Illinois State Police trooper with an unidentified substance.
Valeria Martinez, 45, and Kevin Weinmann, 27, were stopped on a highway for suspected criminal activity, according to Peoria Daily Journal.
Troopers separated the pair during the investigation and it was later learned that during the stop, a substance was placed in a trooper’s sports-drink bottle.
Police didn’t say what the substance was or how it ended up in the trooper’s sports drink.
Illinois State Police Trooper Mindy Carroll said the trooper drank the substance, according to The Associated Press. They added that the trooper was recovering and was stable but didn’t say if the trooper was hospitalized.
The criminal investigation is ongoing, according to Illinois State Police Lieutenant Joe Hutchins.
Martinez was charged with unlawful methamphetamine delivery and battery charges as well as possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis, having no valid driver’s license and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to the Peoria Journal Star. Her bond was set at $250,000.
Weinmann was charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, according to the Peoria Journal Star. Weinmann’s bond was set at $100,000.
Both Martinez and Weinmann were held in jail. A court date is scheduled for Wednesday, according to the Schuyler County State Attorney’s office.
