Woman And Father Beaten With Bat For Asking Beachgoers To Social Distance

A woman and her father were attacked on the beach at Wisteria Island when they told a group partying to stop it.

Key West, FL – A group of college-age people attacked a woman and her 61-year-old father with a baseball bat on Saturday after they were asked to lower the volume and practice social distancing.

The incident occurred on April 4 on Wisteria Island, which is located just off of Key West, WFOR reported.

The woman, 21, said she and her father live on a boat anchored off Wisteria Island and could hear a large gathering on the beach in the afternoon.

She said the group had arrived in three center-console boats and were drinking together on the beach.

The woman said that she and her father approached the group and confronted them about their lack of social distancing, WFOR reported.

That’s when she said they were attacked by the group, and at least one person hit them in their heads with a baseball bat.

The woman told police she didn’t know how many different people had struck them, WFOR reported.

Her father went to the hospital for treatment of his injuries while the daughter stayed behind to talk to the police.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies said in their report that the woman had a large lump on the back of her head, WTSP reported.

There was a witness who he told deputies that he hadn’t seen the actual attack, but he had seen three boats leaving the area as he went to help the people who had been attacked.

The 21-year-old woman also went to the hospital for treatment and was later released, WTSP reported.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating the attack.
