Violent Suspects Attack Cops, Fracturing Officer’s Orbital Bone And Flinging Blood On Police

Portage, IN – Portage police said they were attacked by a trio of suspects on Saturday night, leaving one officer with a fractured orbital bone and several officers covered in blood that one of the suspects was allegedly flinging at them.

The incident occurred after the Portage Police Department (PPD) received a report of a large fight at 3100 Willowdale Road near Myers Elementary School at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Aug 13, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

When they arrived at the scene, they spotted a man whose face was covered in blood trying to flee from the area, according to police.

He was later identified as 37-year-old Robert Johnson, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Officers chased Johnson to a nearby residence, where they wound up getting into a confrontation with the suspect and the homeowners, Matthew and Holly Gonzalez, according to police.

The officers said that the three suspects all appeared to be very intoxicated.

According to court documents, Matthew Gonzalez kept trying to walk away to another room as the officer were trying to speak with him, his wife, and Johnson about the large brawl that had taken place outside the house, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Police said Holly Gonzalez suddenly started shoving one of the officers and was subsequently taken to the ground.

Her husband allegedly clenched his fist and punched a second officer in the face, then wrapped his arm around the officer’s neck in a “guillotine chokehold,” according to the incident report.

One of the officers discharged his Taser multiple times to subdue Matthew Gonzalez, who was ultimately wrestled into handcuffs, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Meanwhile, Johnson was allegedly flinging his blood all over the officers while resisting their efforts to arrest him, according to police.

He was also subdued with a Taser and taken into custody.

The officer Matthew Gonzalez allegedly assaulted was transported to the hospital for treatment, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

The officer suffered bruising, multiple cuts to his right eye, and a right orbital bone fracture, according to police.

A second offer said he suffered elbow and thumb injuries during the brawl with Matthew Gonzalez.

Johnson was arrested on two counts of resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Holly Gonzales has been charged with a felony count of battery to law enforcement and misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement, and battery.

Matthew Gonzales faces felony charges of battery with serious bodily injury, aggravated battery, battery with injury to law enforcement, resisting law enforcement with injury, battery to law enforcement and misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement, and battery, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Johnson and Matthew Gonzalez were both transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries before they were booked into jail.

“While waiting with Matthew to get an X-ray on his elbow he stated to officers that ‘he deserves it, that it was all his fault’ and was apologetic towards officers for his actions,” the police report read.
