Manhattan, NY – A mob of rioters attacked New York police officers with bottles, blocking them from being able to help and 11-year-old girl who was being assaulted, according to police.
The incident occurred in Harlem near Madison Avenue and East 125th Street at approximately 7 p.m. on Aug. 9, the New York Post reported.
The 11-year-old girl was attacked by five other girls after a basketball game, according to a New York Post photographer who witnessed the assault.
She was punched, kicked, slapped, and shocked with a stun gun during the brawl, which lasted for approximately four minutes.
A group of nearby New York Police Department (NYPD) officers tried to stop the attack, but were intercepted by an angry mob, according to the department.
“The officers were met by a large crowd while attempting to come to this person’s assistance,” NYPD spokesperson Al Baker told the New York Post. “They were outnumbered. Projectiles were thrown at them. And they were forced to reposition and call every available resource in the area.”
But according to the New York Post photographer, police “sat idly in nearby cruisers” and allowed the assault to continue.
The photographer estimated that at least 20 patrol vehicles were nearby, and alleged that one patrol car was just feet away from where the attack occurred.
Baker said that the photographer’s claims that the officers did nothing to help the child were “completely inaccurate,” the New York Post reported.
“Despite one newspaper’s account, our officers who came to the assistance of an 11-year-old girl being assaulted in Harlem on Sunday did not stand by,” the NYPD tweeted on Monday evening. “They were met by a large crowd that hurled projectiles at them and had to reposition, then called for additional officers.”
The department shared a video clip that showed the rioters hurling bottles at the officers and squaring off with them in the roadway.
The photographer claimed he did not witness anyone throwing bottles at police.
The clip released by the NYPD did not show the girl being attacked.
She was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital with bruises and cuts, the New York Post reported.
According to investigators, the girl was able to identify two of her attackers using their social media handles.
It is unclear whether or not anyone has been arrested in connection with the assault.
