Violent Abuser Out On Bails Kills Two Sisters, Shoots Toddler In College Dorm

Police have charged Jacques Dshawn Smith for murdering Abbaney and Deja Matts Monday, and another man killed on Dec. 31.

Denton, TX – The 21-year-old man who murdered two sisters and shot a toddler in a Texas dorm room on Monday has also been charged in connection with a killing on New Year’s Eve.

The series of incidents that led to the sisters’ death on Monday began on Jan. 27, when Garland police arrested Jacques Dshawn Smith for an attack on his ex-girlfriend, 20-year-old Abbaney Matts, KTVT reported.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he threw a television at his ex-girlfriend.

Police said that Smith also hit Abbaney Matts with a frying pan and a lamp, and threatened her with a knife, WFAA reported.

Smith’s attack on Abbaney Matts also violated his probation.

KTVT reported that Smith’s criminal history included several aggravated robberies, thefts, and incidences of evading arrest.

Despite violating his probation and the violent attack on his ex-girlfriend, Smith was released on a $15,000 bond just two days after he attacked Abbaney Matts.

The judge issued a protective order to keep Smith away from the victim, but that didn’t stop him, WFAA reported.

On Monday morning, Smith tracked Abbaney Matts down at her little sister’s dorm room on the Texas A&M University – Commerce campus and killed her, KTVT reported.

Smith fatally shot Abbaney Matts and her sister, 19-year-old Deja Matts, and also shot Abbaney Matts’ two-year-old son in the leg.

“Who shoots a baby? Who does that? Let alone two girls?” Timothy Matts, the distraught father of the murdered sisters, asked. “This is what some coward did. They left my daughter without her big sisters.”

On Tuesday, Denton police served a search warrant in Rowlett related to the murders in Commerce and also found evidence related to another murder on Dec. 31, 2019, WFAA reported.

Denton detectives obtained a second search warrant for the residence and later arrested three men in connection with the murder of 22-year-old Steven Daniels on New Year’s Eve.

One of those suspects – Smith – was transported to the Hunt County Jail by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and also charged with the murders of Abbaney and Deja Matts, WFAA reported.
