VIDEO: SUV Drives Through Shopping Mall, Smashing Into Kiosks

A man drove an SUV through a busy suburban Chicago shopping mall on Friday.

Shaumburg, IL – A man drove a black SUV into the Woodfield Mall in Shaumburg on Friday, smashing through storefronts and prompting a panic in the community (video below).

The incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m. on Sept. 20 when a black Chevrolet Trailblazer smashed through the doors at the entrance to Sears near the Rainforest Café in suburban Chicago, NPR reported.

A video posted to social media by a witness showed the SUV weaving through the mall, taking down kiosks in its path as mall patrons dashed out of its way.

First, the SUV drove through the Sears and then went on to terrorize the main concourse of the mall.

The video showed the SUV crashed into the front of a Hollister store and then backed out and continued down the concourse.

Then it wedged its way around a corner and out of sight.

The driver was ultimately stopped and detained by mall patrons and two off-duty police officers, NPR reported.

“I am happy to report that there were only very minor injuries from this incident,” Schaumburg Police Chief Bill Wolf said at a press conference after the incident.

Chief Wolf said none of the mall patrons had been struck during the bizarre incident, NPR reported.

He said police and fire department personnel were on the scene of the incident within two minutes of the first 911 call.

But the first panicked reports of the incident to hit social media called it an “active shooter” situation, according to NPR.

“Although we did originally receive those reports, we did not see any shell casings or anything that would report that there were any shots fired,” Chief Wolf told reporters.

He said that “it appeared that what people heard as shots fired was from the broken glass in the mall,” NPR reported.

Chief Wolf denied reports there was a terrorist connection to the case.

“There is no indication that this was a terrorist attack. There is no indication that this was something preplanned, no indication that the mall itself was a target,” the chief said.

The police chief did not release the driver’s identity but said they were investigating whether the driver may have suffered from a medical condition, NPR reported.

One witness told WGN that they thought the driver’s actions were “definitely intentional.”

“I don’t understand how that could be an accident,” the witness said.

Lateef Farooqui was at the mall when the chaotic madness broke out.

Farooqui said people were screaming and running everywhere, and he heard people saying there were guns, WGN reported.

He said he could hear security yelling for people to run away.

Farooqui said he witnessed the driver being taken into custody, WGN reported.

“He was just quiet, head down, walking straight,” he said. “Not somebody wild, screaming. No chanting. Not any of those things you’d expect of somebody crazy.”
