VIDEO: Suspect Follows Cop Into Police Station Parking Lot, Points Rifle At Officer

Rialto, CA – Security footage captured the moment when a suspect followed a Rialto police vehicle into an employee-only parking lot at police headquarters and repeatedly pointed a rifle at him (video below).

The “brazen armed assault” occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. on Dec. 5 in a “secure area” of the police department compound, Rialto Police Department (RPD) Chief Mark Kling said in a video release on Tuesday.

Chief Kling said a three-year veteran of the RPD was entering the agency’s secured police-vehicle-only parking area in a marked patrol car when a black Dodge Charger drove through the gate behind him.

“There are two signs on either side of the gate that clearly say, ‘Do not enter. Police vehicles only,’” the chief added.

Chief Kling said the officer initially didn’t realize the vehicle had followed him into the parking area.

“As the officer stopped adjacent to the main police facility, there was an employee that came out and the two of them were engaged in a conversation,” the chief continued.

That’s when a man armed with a gun suddenly came running towards them, security footage showed.

Chief Kling described the firearm as an “AR-15-type weapon.”

When the officer spotted the suspect advancing towards him, the gunman suddenly pivoted and briefly started running back in the direction of his vehicle, the chief said.

He stopped as the officer got out of his patrol car, then pointed the gun at the officer yet again, according to the chief.

That’s when the officer fired his duty weapon at the suspect, who immediately collapsed to the pavement, the video showed.

“The suspect was shot multiple times,” Chief Kling said.

Additional officers ran out of the facility and took the gunman into custody before Rialto Fire Department paramedics moved in to render emergency medical assistance.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, CBS News reported.

His identity was not immediately released.

The RPD said the suspect is a San Bernardino resident who has a criminal history.

Chief Kling said the entire incident occurred in just one minute and 50 seconds, CBS News reported.

Investigators are looking into whether the rifle the suspect pointed at the officer was an actual firearm or a replica.

No officers were injured during the incident.

“The brazenness of criminals in today’s society is just overwhelming to me,” Chief Mark Kling said during a press conference, according to KTLA. “I’ve been doing this for 37 years and in 37 years, I would’ve never ever thought that somebody would’ve come in, armed with some type of a weapon and assaulted our police officers. And I think what is so concerning is it’s just not here in the City of Rialto. It’s happening everywhere.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division is handling the ongoing independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
