VIDEO: Suspect Fatally Shot After Pointing Gun At At Tampa Cop

Tampa, FL – Bodycam footage captured the moment when a suspect pointed a gun at a Tampa police officer during a foot pursuit on Independence Day (video below).

The incident began just after 10 p.m. on July 4, when Tampa police received a report of a fight in the area of the 3700-block of Temple Street, the Tampa Police Department (TPD) said in a media release on Tuesday.

The reporting party said one of the suspects was armed with a gun, according to police.

Bodycam footage showed TPD Officer Bryan Velazquez, 33, as he checked out at a convenience store and tried to locate the armed suspect.

After making contact with several people inside and outside the business, Officer Velazquez located a witness who said the suspect was wearing red boxer shorts and was right outside the front of the store, the video showed.

Officer Velazquez hustled out of the store and soon spotted the armed man on the other side of the parking lot.

He was later identified by TPD as 40-year-old John Reuben Turbe.

“Hey! Put the gun down!” Officer Velazquez ordered as he drew his duty weapon and pointed it in Turbe’s direction. “Put it down!”

The officer alerted over his radio that he was pursuing an armed suspect as he chased after Turbe and repeatedly told him to drop his gun.

“You’re gonna get shot,” Officer Velazquez warned. “Put the gun down now! I’m right here!”

That’s when Turbe spun around and pointed his gun directly at the officer.

Officer Velazquez fired his weapon, hitting Turbe.

“Shots fired,” the officer alerted over the radio.

Additional officers raced to the scene and performed chest compressions on the wounded suspect before he was transported to a hospital by emergency medical personnel, FOX News reported.

Turbe was pronounced dead a short while later.

TPD said no one else was injured during the incident.

Officer Velazquez, a two-year TPD veteran, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the shooting is being conducted, FOX News reported.
