VIDEO: Surveillance Shows As Teen Suddenly Starts Shooting Deputy

A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy was shot in the hip by a 16-year-old gunman early Sunday morning.

Harvey, LA – A Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy was shot by a 16-year-old gunman on Sunday morning, after the deputy pulled two teens over for driving a stolen vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Brother’s Food Mart store, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Glen Boyd told NOLA.

After the unnamed sergeant affected a traffic stop on the suspected stolen vehicle, a 16-year-old male exited the car, and began walking towards a gas pump with his hands raised, surveillance footage showed.

The teen suddenly stopped, dropped his hands, and could be seen fumbling with something near his waistband.

He then drew a handgun, and opened fire on the approaching sergeant before he fled from the area.

The sergeant fell to the ground and returned fire, but did not hit the suspect, NOLA reported.

He sustained a gunshot wound to his right hip, and was rushed to a local hospital.

The sergeant was expected to make a full recovery, WVUE reported.

Deputies quickly apprehended the gunman approximately 300 feet from the gas station, police said.

He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and possession of a stolen license plate, Boyd told NOLA.

The teen, who had no prior criminal history, was being held at the Rivarde Juvenile Detention Center. It was unclear whether or not he would be charged as an adult.

His passenger, 18-year-old Derek Lightell, was arrested on charges of marijuana distribution, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a stolen license plate, NOLA reported.

He was also being held in relation to a fugitive charge from another jurisdiction.

Lightell was not given bond on the fugitive offense, and was held on $20,600 bond in relation to the traffic stop.

The sheriff’s office said they planned to release the injured sergeant’s name later in the week, WVUE reported.
