Sandy MaloneDallas, TX – A teenager and an unidentified female school resource officer were shot when gunfire broke out at a high school basketball gave in Dallas on Saturday night (video below).
The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Jan. 11 during a basketball game between South Oak Cliff and Kimball high schools at the Ellis Davis Field House in the 9100-block of South Polk Street, KTVT reported.
Dallas police told reporters after the incident that they believed the 18-year-old victim was a former student at South Oak Cliff High School.
The basketball game was in progress when gunfire suddenly rang out through the arena, KTVT reported.
Cell phone video captured by WFAA, who was at the field house to cover the game, showed a basketball game in progress when suddenly shots rang out in the gym.
Investigators said there was an altercation and multiple shots were fired.
Police said an 18 year old and a Dallas Independent School District school resource officer were shot, KTVT reported.
The teen was shot in the chest and was in serious condition when he was transported to the hospital. His condition was unknown.
Dallas Police Spokeswoman Robyn L. Harris said the school resource officer was hit by a bullet fragment and suffered only a graze wound.
“She was actually grazed and is expected to be okay,” Harris said.
She said that the Dallas ISD officers in the area “acted very swiftly” when the shooting started and the officer who was wounded was running toward gunfire when she was hit.
“She did put herself in harm’s way to find a way to safely secure the area,” Harris told reporters.
The gunman fled the arena after the shooting and police are looking for multiple persons of interest who were captured on video inside the stadium, KXAS reported.
South Oak Cliff held a ribbon cutting ceremony just hours before the basketball game to celebrate their newly renovated school campus.
