VIDEO: Robbery Suspect Steals Cop Car, Nearly Kills Multiple Officers While Trying To Escape

West Haven, CT – A robbery suspect tried to evade capture by stealing a police vehicle and ramming it through a cemetery fence on Wednesday (video below).

Several of the officers trying to apprehend the suspect were hit and nearly ran over by the stolen police SUV, video footage showed.

The incident began at approximately 11:15 a.m., when another law enforcement agency notified the West Haven Police Department (WHPD) that two suspects in a stolen vehicle had just taken the Interstate 95 exit onto Campbell Avenue, WTIC reported.

In addition to the vehicle being stolen, the suspects had also allegedly used the same vehicle in multiple purse snatchings and robberies in various Connecticut shoreline communities in recent days, according to police.

WHPD officers spotted the suspect vehicle in the area of Mix Avenue and First Avenue and tried to pull the driver over, but the suspect instead continued to the intersection of West Spring Street and Campbell Avenue, where he was boxed in by heavy traffic, WTIC reported.

The suspects crashed into multiple vehicles at the intersection before the driver bailed out and took off on foot, police said.

As officers were taking the second suspect into custody, the driver ran back to the scene and jumped into a WHPD patrol SUV, WTIC reported.

He threw the vehicle into reverse, hitting several officers, then accelerated forward, jumping a curb and nearly running over another officer, video footage of the scene showed.

The suspect drove across the grass and through a fence surrounding a cemetery before becoming hung up while trying to drive through a second fence, the video showed.

Police swarmed the suspect as he tried to run away and quickly took him into custody.

The WHPD later said both suspects are juvenile males, WTIC reported.

Two of the officers who were injured during the melee were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the department.

The WHPD said in a statement that it is “thankful that none of our Officers or citizens sustained more severe injuries due to this reckless and careless act by these juvenile males,” WTIC reported.
