VIDEO: Rioters Bombard NYPD Cruisers Responding To Shots Fired Call

Manhattan, NY – Rioters pelted New York City police vehicles with debris and glass bottles as they were investigating a report of shots fired in Harlem early Sunday morning (video below).

Hundreds of people were gathered near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and 133rd Street for a block party that began on Saturday night, Gothamist reported.

At approximately 3:34 a.m. on Sunday, as the party raged on, ShotSpotter technology detected gunfire in the area and alerted police, a department spokesperson told the news outlet.

Cell phone footage showed a New York Police Department (NYPD) vehicle parked at the edge of the litter-strewn intersection where approximately 500 partygoers continued to mill about.

Several people began hurling trash and bottles at the patrol SUV as the officers slowly backed away from the irate crowd, the video showed.

The NYPD later released photos of one of the suspects who cell phone footage showed throwing a large glass liquor bottle at the vehicle.

He is now wanted for criminal mischief, according to police.

The NYPD said that one patrol vehicle’s driver’s side window and windshield were damaged in the attacks, Gothamist reported.

According to a department spokesperson, investigators located several spent shell casings and two fired bullets at the scene, but did not find any weapons or anyone that had been injured.

The mob ultimately dispersed just before 6:30 a.m., CNN reported.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said that he found the attack on his officers to be “deeply troubling,” according to FOX News.

“It is an unprovoked assault on our cops. It continues as they attempt to deescalate,” Commissioner Shea said. “We have clear images of some of the worst perpetrators. We are offering an award for their arrest.”

The New York Sergeant’s Benevolent Association (SBA) urged law enforcement officers and their families to avoid the city due to the lack of support from elected officials.

“To all our friends in law enforcement both outside & in the USA. DO NOT visit NYC & DO NOT encourage friends & family to visit,” the SBA tweeted on Sunday. “The city is dangerous thanks to our elected officials.”

The New York City Police Benevolent Association (PBA) also shared video footage of the attack.

“This is what a ‘light touch’ looks like: Police officers responding to a shots fired job in Harlem last night were met with this,” the PBA tweeted. “@NYCMayor, @NYCSpeakerCojo and company should be held responsible for surrendering our city.”
