BY OFFICER BLUE
The incident started Thursday afternoon when Watkins Glen Police Department officers tried to stop 76-year-old Norman Covert. Covert pulled over for the officers, but then suddenly tried to flee in his vehicle, ramming police cars.
The police officers responded by trying to break out the windows to pull him out, but they appeared to be having some (a lot) of difficulty. At one point, an officer appears to borrow a hoe from a nearby resident to help him break out the window.
Norman Covert was able to get his vehicle away after repeatedly smashing into patrol cars. He led police on a short pursuit before he was taken into custody without further incident.
WETM 18 News reports that law enforcement from the Village of Watkins Glen Police Department, Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police assisted in the chase.
Covert will be charged with criminal mischief. Nobody was injured during the incident.
