HollyMatkinSan Antonio, TX – An off-duty San Antonio police officer was shot at least six times on Tuesday night, after a road-raging driver opened fire on him in the parking lot of a gentlemen’s club (video below).
The San Antonio Police Pipes & Drums identified the injured officer as Officer Dezi Rios, according to a post on the group’s Facebook page.
Police responded to reports of the shooting just after 9:30 p.m., the Star-Telegram reported.
The incident began as an “altercation on the highway,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference.
Officer Rios and the driver of a second vehicle both pulled off into the parking lot of the Allstars Gentleman’s Club, Chief McManus explained.
“We don’t know how or why they pulled in here,” the chief added, but both men exited their vehicles.
Demontae Lashaun Walker, 25, accused the off-duty officer of cutting him off on the roadway, KABB reported.
He then opened fire, striking the Officer Rios at least six times “mostly in the mid to lower torso,” Chief McManus said.
The officer “retreated” back to his vehicle, retrieved his weapon, and “returned fire,” the chief explained.
He said that Walker was hit “two, possibly three times,” and that a female passenger in Walker’s vehicle received a “graze wound” to her head.
Cell phone footage recorded by a patron at the club showed the aftermath of the shootout.
In the video, a woman was seen rushing towards the door of the building. Screaming could be heard in the background.
A moment later, a man with blood-soaked clothing stumbled towards the doorway, then collapsed to the ground.
All three individuals injured in the shootout are expected to survive, Chief McManus said.
Officer Rios, an 11-year-veteran of the department, was taken to a local hospital, and remains in critical condition following surgery early Wednesday morning, KABB reported.
Walker’s female passenger was treated with stitches. Police have not released information regarding whose bullet injured her, the Star-Telegram reported.
Walker was also taken into surgery and was listed in stable condition.
He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and his bond was set at $150,000, the Star-Telegram reported.
