AndrewBlakeFrisco, TX – Dallas Cowboys football player Terrance Williams was arrested May 19 and charged with public intoxication after police found him erratically riding an electronic scooter not far from where his Lamborghini was crashed
The dash cam video of the incident was released by the Frisco Police Department (video below.)
Later, Williams said in a statement that a driver in front of him slammed on their brakes and that lead to a crash and his neighbor picked him up when his car would not start, according to KXAS-TV.
In the video, Williams is seen swerving on the scooter and then faceplants as a police car approached.
When police asked Williams if he had been drinking, the NFL player said, “I would never lie to y’all,” according to KXAN- TV.
Williams’ attorney Chip Lewis said there was no proof Williams was driving his car while intoxicated, according to KXAS.
Williams initially told the police in the video that it was his friend who was driving the car and he was on the way to the scene on his electric scooter.
Williams’ friend was Kendall Wright, a NFL player with the Minnesota Vikings.
But Williams’ attorney said that Wright was not driving the Lamborghini and that the trauma of the crash may have caused Williams to say that.
“There’s never been any confusion in my discussions with him that he was sole occupant, driving the vehicle,” Lewis said, according to KXAS.
Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones supported his player.
“I know Terrance,” Jones said, according to USA Today. “He’s solid. Real solid. I’m hopeful. I don’t know the details. I read his public statement about it and take it at face value.”
The statement he is referring to said:
“I am grateful that no one was injured in the accident. The driver in front of me slammed on his brakes and I turned to the left and hopped the curb to avoid hitting him. I got his insurance information and my neighbor picked me up when my car wouldn’t drive. I live right near where the accident occurred, so my neighbor dropped me off and I called a tow truck and took the scooter from my house to go meet the tow truck driver. The police officer, who I have met in the past in the neighborhood, saw me on the scooter and arrested me without performing any sobriety tests. I have always been an upstanding citizen and handled the situation the best way I know how. I apologize if I should have handled it a little bit differently.”
Williams has played for the Cowboys his entire five-year career. He caught 53 passes for 568 yards in 2017. He signed a four-year, $17 million contract with the Cowboys in June of 2017 that included a $5 million signing bonus.
