Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have released the bodycam video of an officer-involved shooting on New Year’s Eve that occurred after a naked man with a knife charged officers (video below).
LAPD officers responded to a 911 call reporting a screaming woman in the 13600-block of Vanowen Street at about 4 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2018, according to a press release from the police department.
Bodycam video showed that when they arrived on the scene, they located the suspect’s apartment and knocked on the door.
Once they knocked, chaos ensued inside, the video showed.
“Police department!” LAPD Officer Ko Kim announced after the knock.
Suddenly, there was a sound of glass smashing and screaming inside the apartment, the video showed.
“Come on now,” the man behind the door snarled. “I am going to kill you.”
It sounded as though the man were attacking someone inside the apartment.
“Oh yeah baby,” the same man yelled.
There was a lot more crashing and yelling before the door opened, the video showed.
The video showed the officers backing a away from the door before it was opened by a naked man.
Rony Parras-Mendez, 18, appeared in the doorway holding a big knife in his hand, which he quickly dropped.
“Let me see your hands,” both officers yelled at the naked man. Then they repeated the order multiple times.
The video showed that Parras-Mendez ignored officers’ commands and instead bent over to retrieve the blade, which was approximately nine inches in length, according to the LAPD press release.
Then, with the knife held in both hands, he charged Officer Kim, the video showed.
Officer Kim opened fire and Parras-Mendez dropped to the floor in the corner of the hallway, the video showed.
He was declared dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department, according to the press release.
Prior to officers’ arrival on the scene, Parras-Mendez had assaulted a man at the apartment complex, according to LAPD.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
No officers were injured during the incident, the press release said.
