HollyMatkinPort Hueneme, CA – A reckless driver led officers on a slow-speed pursuit on Sunday, before he barricaded himself in his vehicle and stripped down to his underwear (video below).
A video of the scene showed the aftermath of the three-hour standoff, which ended with police using a less-lethal round to subdue the combative man.
The incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m., when the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) received a report of a reckless and possibly intoxicated driver, the Ventura County Star reported.
An officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, and led officers on a 20 mph chase through Port Hueneme, according to Safety for Citizens.
The driver, later identified as 40-year-old Ryan Faberbrook, ultimately stopped his vehicle at the entrance to the Port Hueneme Naval Base, but he refused to exit his car.
Over the course of the next three hours, Faberbrook removed most of his clothing, swore at officers, and threw trash at them, prompting SWAT and a K9 officer to respond.
At approximately 2 p.m., after all efforts to communicate with the man had failed, the SWAT team broke out the rear window of Faberbrook’s vehicle, and deployed a flash bang.
The defiant man then climbed out of the back passenger door of his car, and squared off with police, who were just feet away.
Deputies responded by firing a less-lethal round at Faberbrook, dropping him to the ground. A crowd of onlookers who had convened at the scene could be heard cheering as the officers took the boxer-clad suspect into custody.
Faberbrook continued to resist arrest, and one officer deployed a Taser to subdue him.
He was treated at the scene for minor injuries, before being taken to jail for suspicion of felony evading an officer and resisting arrest, the Ventura County Star reported.
According to Safety for Citizens, a Port Hueneme Police sergeant said that Faberbrook has a history of mental illness.
His bond was set at $50,000.
