Manhattan, NY – An Asian New York police officer was repeatedly berated and called racial slurs after asking a black man to move away from a police van and onto a nearby sidewalk on Saturday night (video below).
The profanity-filled tirade occurred in Greenwich Village after officers clashed with protesters in Washington Square Park, the New York Post reported.
Police ended up declaring the gathering an unlawful assembly because the mob refused to comply with the park’s new 10 p.m. curfew, according to the New York Post.
At least 22 people were arrested.
An officer in riot gear was trying to move people away from a police van and onto a sidewalk near the scene of the mayhem when a man suddenly twisted off on him, cell phone footage showed.
“You ain’t even from this country!” the irate man, who is black, yelled at the Asian officer. “You piece of s—t! You f—king ch-nk! Get the f—k out of here.”
The unidentified suspect continued to call the officer a “ch-nk” dozens of times as another officer stepped in and tried to move the man along, the video showed.
“I’m on the sidewalk,” the suspect retorted, honing in on the Asian officer yet again. “Get the f—k out of here you ch-nk! You f—king ch-nk!”
The group of officers attempted to walk away from the confrontation, but the suspect continued to harass them as he walked parallel to them on the sidewalk.
That’s when a bystander on a bicycle jumped in and accosted the man for the racist tirade.
“Why you calling people ch–k, man?” the bystander asked. “Stop calling people ch–ks, man, that’s f–ked up. You racist as s–t. You’re a racist f–k!”
The suspect then turned his attention to the biker, ordering him repeatedly to “suck my d—k,” the video showed.
“Black people can’t be racist, you piece of s—t!” the belligerent suspect added.
He then resumed his beratement of the NYPD officer.
“You f—king ch-nk. I said it! What you wanna do?” he taunted. “Watch my mouth for what, you ch-nk? F—king pig!”
The suspect declared he works for “the state” as officers left him behind a barrier and walked away.
His vulgar tirade continued as they left the area.
“Each day, NYPD officers are expected to maintain a level of professionalism under an array of difficult circumstances,” a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson told the New York Post. “In this instance, an Asian police officer was subjected to an ugly onslaught of racial slurs and maintained his composure. However, it is disturbing to see this type of language used against any Asian person in light of the disturbing increase of Asian hate crimes citywide.”
Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch said the verbal onslaught was the result of New York’s soft-on-crime politics.
“Criminals know that the politicians are all talk,” Lynch told the New York Post. “They know there are no real consequences for their vicious anti-Asian hate, even when it’s directed at a police officer. If the politicians really want to ‘Stop the Hate,’ they need to stop demonizing cops first.”
