SandyMaloneMiddletown, CT – Police said that the man who intenionally crashed his car into the entrance of the Middlesex Hospital Emergency Room on Thursday was streaming live on Facebook.
Steven Ellam, 27, ranted about President Donald Trump, the Illuminati, and one percenters before driving his car through the doors of the emergency room at about 10 a.m. on Feb. 22, the Hartford Courant reported.
After the crash, Ellam jumped out of his Chevrolet Cobalt, yelled “death to the new world order,” and then set himself on fire.
He was airlifted to Bridgeport Hospital, and his condition had not been released.
No one else was injured in the crash. A hospital security guard was later treated for smoke inhalation.
Shortly after the incident, police discovered the Ellam had been filming himself on Facebook Live throughout the horrible ordeal.
“Donald Trump, where are you? My name’s Jesus Christ. I’m in Middletown, Connecticut and I am going to attack one of your headquarters right now. Middlesex Hospital is not safe,” he said into the camera at the start of the video, according to WTIC.
“I’ve come to expose you as the anti-Christ, protecting the Illuminati, the one percent,” Ellam said, according to the Hartford Courant.
“The one percent have been trying to brainwash me to attack the police for I don’t know how long,” he said, as the video continued.
Then he announced his target on Facebook Live.
“I know that you are, you are their protector and I am going to attack one of your headquarters right now – Middlesex Hospital. Death to the Illuminati, death to the world order, the world order is Jesus Christ,” Ellam announced, before ramming his car into the doors of the hospital’s emergency room.
Witnesses said he jumped out of the car and set himself on fire, screaming “Jesus, Jesus” and “save me, save me” as the flames spread, the Hartford Courant reported.
Medical staff rushed outside to help the screaming madman.
Bomb squads from the Hartford Police and the Connecticut State Police converged on the scene, and found cans with flammable liquid in his car, the Hartford Courant reported.
Middletown Police Chief William McKenna said Ellam had an extensive criminal history, and has been known to police since he was 14 years old.
In June of 2013, he accused a woman of having sinned, and then told her she told her she would have to repent before he attacked her. He pleaded guilty to first-degree strangulation, interfering with police officers, and violating probation, and was sentenced to 33 months in prison, the Hartford Courant reported.
Ellam was charged with assaulting his father in 2010, and court records showed he had also been arrested for assault, a hit-and-run car accident, and drunken driving.
“He did have a probation officer assigned to him – whether or not he’s still on probation I don’t know, but I did put a call in but we haven’t heard back to see if he is officially or not,” Middletown Police Captain Gary Wallace said at a press conference on Thursday.
Emergency patients were being diverted from Middlesex Hospital on Friday, as the emergency room remained closed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were both on the scene and assisting with the investigation, according to FBI New Haven Division Chief Patricia Ferrick.
