Pine, CO – A man who became involved in a violent bar fight while he held onto his 4-year-old daughter on Jan. 25 has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse (video below).
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) released surveillance footage on Monday of the altercation that occurred at about 10:10 p.m. Crossroads Pizza and Wings, KDVR reported.
Police said that Richard Brown, 39, was eating dinner with his family when the fight broke out.
The video showed Brown aggressively approaching another man in the bar, while he held his four-year old daughter in his left arm.
A woman stepped between them, and held her arms out in an apparent attempt to block Brown’s access to the man, and then another woman began thrusting her finger at Brown’s chest, as several other people entered the frame.
Before the actual fight began, a man tried to take the little girl from Brown to remove her from the melee, but her father held on tightly.
As Brown yelled at one of the men, another man to his left suddenly reached out, passing in front of Brown’s daughter, and blindsided him with a backhanded slap to the face.
Brown then turned toward the assailant, and threw a punch of his own.
The man who was trying to rescue the four year old continued to try and remove her from her father’s grasp throughout the fight, as blows rained down on her father only a foot or two away from the child’s head.
The video showed Brown held his daughter through 13 seconds of the fight.
Brown was struck from behind by one assailant, but continued to hold onto his daughter for approximately ten more hits, before he fell backwards onto the floor.
The man trying to rescue the little girl was only able to pull her away after Brown began to lose his balance due to the blows to his head.
The young girl was rushed out of the area, as two men descended on Brown, and repeatedly punched and kicked him.
Brown was pummeled after his daughter was taken from him. After a brutal kick to the face, the video ended.
He was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. The child was not injured, according to the sheriff’s department.
Despite the obvious conflict with the video, Brown’s family tried to claim that he did not have an opportunity to get his daughter to safety before the fight broke out.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office argued that he actually had multiple opportunities to protect the little girl, and issued Brown a citation for misdemeanor child abuse.
Police located the suspects who won the fight. 31-year-old Joel Wilson and 22-year-old Devon Premer are being charged with first-degree assault – extreme indifference, second-degree assault – serious bodily injury, and child abuse.
Investigators were still working to identify the second suspect, who was described as a white male with a thin build. He was believed to be in his mid-20s, and was approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall.
