Jamestown, NY – A Jamestown police officer heroically rescued a family from an inferno that engulfed their home early Monday morning (video below).
Jamestown Police Officer Mark Conklin, 25, was responding to a separate call on Baker Street when he was notified about a possible house fire on William Street, Jamestown Police Department (JPD) Chief Tim Jackson said in a press release on July 19.
Bodycam footage showed the officer as he frantically ran through the neighborhood towards the burning house shortly after midnight.
He arrived to find the home engulfed by the inferno.
An adult and several children were trapped in the upstairs area, Chief Jackson said.
Officer Conklin, a four-year veteran of the JPD, said he had one thought running through his head as he ran up to the burning home that night, The Post-Journal reported.
“Make sure everyone gets out,” he told himself.
Officer Conklin radioed for help from the Jamestown Fire Department and, despite the extreme heat, moved in closer to the blaze in order to catch a woman and a child as they leapt from a second-story window into his arms.
He also rescued three more victims from the main floor, WANE reported.
The family escaped the inferno without injuries, according to the news outlet.
“I can say that I have seen many examples of heroism over the years by officers,” Chief Jackson said in the press release. “After watching the video of this incident and speaking to others involved, I can say that the actions of Officer Conklin were, to say the least, one of the most outstanding examples of bravery, heroism, and exemplary service I have seen.”
“We, the Jamestown Police Department, are honored to have officers such as Mark Conklin working in the Jamestown Police Department,” the chief added.
Officer Conklin said he was just doing his job and that he thinks anyone else would have reacted the same way, The Post Journal reported.
“I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time,” he said.
A fundraising page established to help the family of six has raised over $9,000 so far.
