Hollywood, FL – Pictures and dashcam video from National Football League (NFL) Pro Bowler Vontae Davis’s DUI crash on Saturday morning showed the former football star was napping on the side of the highway when police arrived on the scene (video below).
The wreck occurred at about 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 4 on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood when a black Tesla driven by Davis smashed into a pickup truck, totaling both vehicles, WTVJ reported.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the pickup truck was parked on the side of the road with a flat tire.
The pickup’s driver was standing beside his vehicle, according to WTVJ.
He was struck by his own vehicle when the Tesla crashed into it, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The truck’s driver suffered multiple injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment, WTVJ reported.
The driver of the Tesla, former NFL star Davis, was not injured in the crash and was asleep on the side of the turnpike, not far from the wrecked vehicles, when officers arrived on the scene.
@vontaedavis You almost killed a family man. Your lucky to be alive, your car looks like a crumpled up soda can. If your going to go out and drink hire a chauffeur or call an Uber. Your lucky your not facing vehicular homicide charges. pic.twitter.com/OH7Qs3R8Ep

“Upon approaching Mr. Davis, I noticed that he was laying down on the right shoulder sleeping,” the state trooper wrote in the crash report.
The trooper said she asked Davis why he was sleeping and he told her he was tired.
She said the former professional running back, who played for the Miami Dolphins, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Buffalo Bills, had “blood shot red” eyes and couldn’t stay upright, WTVJ reported.
“He had to lean on the concrete barrier wall to keep himself sitting upright. With slurred speech Mr. Davis stated that he was not injured,” the trooper wrote in the report.
Davis told the trooper that he was on the way home from a strip club and that he had only consumed two mixed drinks, WTVJ reported.
But dashcam video from the trooper’s patrol vehicle showed that Davis struggled to get into the car.
The police report said the former NFL player refused to take a roadside sobriety test or a breath test, WTVJ reported.
He was transported to Broward Hospital to be checked out before he was taken to jail and booked on drunk driving charges, TMZ reported.
Court records showed that Davis pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge and bonded out of jail early on Monday morning.
Davis played in the NFL from 2009 through 2018 and went to the Pro Bowl twice, WTVJ reported.
