VIDEO: Father Of Murder Victim Lunges At Accused Killers During Court Hearing

Nashville, TN – The father of a 26-year-old woman who was fatally shot while driving to work two years ago was removed from the courtroom on Tuesday after he allegedly lunged at his daughter’s accused killers.

James Cowan and Devaunte Hill have both been charged with first-degree murder for the Dec. 3, 2020 shooting death of 26-year-old Caitlyn Kaufman, Inside Edition reported.

Their jury trial is slated to begin on Jan. 23, 2023, according to WSMV.

Caitlyn Kaufman’s parents, Rick and Diane Kaufman, were present in the courtroom when Cowan and Hill appeared before Judge Angelita Dalton for a motion hearing on Nov. 15, WSMV reported.

When the two alleged killers were brought into the courtroom that morning, it was the first time Rick Kaufman had seen them face-to-face, according to the news outlet.

The grieving father yelled and rushed towards the two defendants, pushing through the gallery partition before courtroom officials stopped him and forcibly escorted him out to the hallway, video footage showed.

Diane Kaufman remained seated and wiped away tears as the incident unfolded.

Her husband remained outside the courtroom for the remainder of the hearing, WSMV reported.

Caitlyn Kaufman had moved to Nashville from the family’s home in Pennsylvania after she became a nurse.

The Ascension St. Thomas West ICU nurse was driving on Interstate 440 between the Hillsboro Road exit and the West End exit when a gunman fired at least six rounds at her vehicle, WZTV reported.

Caitlyn Kaufman was able to pull her bullet-riddled SUV over to the side of the road, but investigators said she died before she could call 911, WTVF reported.

The medical examiner said she died within 15 second of being shot, according to WZTV.

A witness testified that the shooting occurred after Kaitlyn Kaufman cut the suspects’ vehicle off in traffic, and described the attack as a fit of road rage, WSVM reported.

Investigators zeroed in on Hill and Cowan after a Nashville Metro Police Department (NMPD) informant traded firearms with Hill, then brought Hill’s gun to police in order to collect reward money.

Hill was arrested less than a week after Caitlyn Kaufman’s murder, and Cowan was apprehended more than a month afterwards, WSMV reported.

Investigators said they seized two handguns from Cowan’s vehicle when he was arrested.

Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of life in prison if Hill and Cowan are convicted, WTVF reported.
