VIDEO: Father Assaults Son’s Opponent In High School Wrestling Match

A father was charged with assault after he charged a high school wrestler during a match

Kannapolis, NC – A North Carolina father was charged with assault after he charged onto a wrestling mat during a high school match to assault a wrestler who had just executed an illegal move by dropping the man’s son on his head.

While running at full speed, Barry Jones shoved the his son’s opponent and sent the wrestler tumbling to the ground, according to Time (Video below).

The video shows the high school wrestler picked up Jones’ son and dropped him head-first to the mat before the referee signaled the illegal move.

The wrestler had his back turned to Jones when the man launched the attack.

Police said the two high school wrestlers were not seriously injured, according to Time.

Parents from the Hickory Ridge wrestling team apologized on Facebook, according to WGHP.

“WE ARE DEEPLY SORRY,” the Facebook post stated.

“We want you to know that we experienced the same nightmare WITH you yesterday. We are in shock, horror and disbelief by the inconceivable action of one parent on a wrestler. We don’t understand it nor would we ever condone it,” the Facebook post stated, according to WGHP. “Though our parents review the HRHS code of conduct in pre-season mandatory parent meetings, this parent chose to disregard the code and, for that, we are ashamed. His action does not reflect the beliefs of the parents or the HRHS wrestling program. To the parents of the wrestler who was tackled — we wholeheartedly apologize.”

It was signed, “The parents of the HRHS wrestling team”.

Leigh Hebbard, the Guilford County Schools director of athletics, released a statement saying he appreciated the apology from the opposing team’s parents.

“We were troubled to see the assault of one of our student athletes, reportedly by a parent of an opposing team member,” the statement read, according to WGHP. “However, we greatly appreciate the apology and words of support from the staff and families of the Hickory Ridge Wrestling team who have reached out to us and who share our concerns.”
