Delta Township, MI – Michigan State Police (MSP) released bodycam video of a sheriff’s deputy shooting a man armed with a knife who had just stabbed another man in a dispute about wearing a mask (video below).
The incident began at about 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday inside a Dimondale Quality Dairy store after 43-year-old Sean Ernest Ruis was refused service because he was not wearing a mask, MLive reported.
Michigan State Police Lieutenant Brian Oleksyk said that a 77-year-old customer who was wearing a mask confronted Ruis, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
Lt. Oleksyk said Ruis stabbed the elderly man and then fled the store.
An Eaton County sheriff’s deputy spotted Ruis at about 7:13 a.m. on July 14 on Jerryson Drive in Delta Township and stopped him, MLive reported.
Surveillance video from a nearby house showed that Ruis got out of his car the moment he was stopped.
Lt. Oleksyk said that when the deputy stopped him, Ruis got out of his vehicle with a knife in each hand and headed toward the deputy.
The sheriff’s deputy, a 22-year veteran of her department, was heard on the video yelling “drop it!” over and over again as Ruis continued to approach her.
The suspect began repeating her words, mocking her, the video showed.
“Drop the weapon,” she yelled. “Drop it.”
“Drop the weapon,” Ruis repeated.
“Yeah,” the deputy replied in the video.
“Drop the weapon. Drop it,” Ruis repeated as he walked toward her.
“Drop it!” the deputy yelled.
“Drop it,” Ruis replied.
Bodycam showed that when Ruis got within 10 feet of the deputy, he began slashing at her with a long knife in each hand.
The deputy opened fire, shooting Ruis five times at close range, but the man didn’t stop coming at her, the video showed.
The video showed that her weapon jammed just as the suspect lunged at her.
It appeared in the video that the knife in the Ruis’ left hand actually struck the deputy’s gun but she wasn’t cut and jumped backward.
The video showed the deputy quickly cleared the gun manlfunction and began shooting again as Ruis bent over to retrieve the knife he’d dropped when he tried to attack the deputy.
The deputy fired five more times before Ruis fell to the ground, and once he was on the ground he continued to reach for his knife, the video showed.
Ruis was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery but later died, MLive reported.
His 77-year-old stabbing victim from the convenience store was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
He remained hospitalized and his condition was unknown, the Detroit News reported.
The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office has not released any information regarding the deputy involved in the incident.
