Reno, NV – A Washoe County sheriff’s deputy missed the suspect and Tased a Reno cop in the knee, causing that officer to discharge his weapon and shoot the suspect (video below).
The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on July 26 after a deputy stopped a reckless driver on South Virginia Street, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
The driver was uncooperative so the deputy requested backup.
Additional deputies and Reno police officers responded to the scene to assist the deputy, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
Reno Police Deputy Chief Tom Robinson said that when officers arrived, several deputies had the suspect surrounded and were pointing their Tasers at him.
Bodycam videos from the incident showed deputies repeatedly ordered the suspect to get on the ground.
As the video began, the suspect appeared to be changing clothes as deputies asked him to get on his knees.
“No,” the suspect replied.
“Let’s talk about this,” a deputy said in the video. “Let’s figure this out.”
“I’m going to run, I’m sorry,” the suspect replied as he continued to dress.
“Here’s my things. Here’s my things. Here,” the suspect said as he picked up his discarded pants and wallet and brought them closer to the law enforcement officers that had surrounded him.
He knelt and appeared to take his driver’s license out of the wallet to show to officers.
In the video, the officers encircled the suspect with guns and Tasers drawn.
Then the suspect stood up and took a step toward one of the Reno officers.
The video showed that was when a deputy discharged her Taser in the suspect’s direction.
But she missed her target and shot a Reno police officer in the knee instead, the video showed.
Chief Robinson said the officer who was hit “unintentionally” discharged his service weapon when he was struck and shot the suspect in the shoulder, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
The suspect turned and tried to walk away after he was shot but the officers surrounded him again and ordered him to the ground, the video showed.
Bodycam video showed the deputy who shot the officer with her Taser quickly ejected and replaced the cartridge and ordered the wounded suspect to his knees.
The bleeding man eventually complied with officer commands and laid down on the pavement, the video showed.
Deputies and officers surrounded him and immediately began to render aid.
The video showed the officer who shot the suspect pulled out a tourniquet and quickly applied it to the man’s arm.
As he bent down to render aid, the Taser prongs could be seen still attached to his knee.
“You’re OK, you’re OK,” the female deputy repeatedly told the suspect as he was worked on. “Medical is here for you, OK. Talk to me, what’s your birthday?”
He was transported to the hospital and treated for his gunshot wound, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
Then he was arrested by the Sparks Police Department and charged with reckless driving and obstructing and resisting an officer.
Authorities said the officer who was shot with the Taser was also transported to the hospital to have the prongs removed from his leg, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
Sparks police have taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as required by the Regional Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol.
