VIDEO: Deputies Rush To Save Fallen Hero After Gun Battle With Domestic Violence Suspect

Lake Elsinore, CA – The last part of a deadly encounter between a domestic violence suspect and law enforcement in Lake Elsinore on Friday was captured on video by a drone and showed how fellow deputies tried to save Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun’s life (video below).

The incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on Jan. 14 when Deputy Calhoun was the first law enforcement officer to arrive in the 18000-block of Hilldale Lane in the unincorporated area of Lakeland Village, CBS News reported.

The sheriff’s department said that as Deputy Calhoun approached the residence, the suspect opened fire on him.

A drone video of the incident that began at that point – after Deputy Calhoun had been shot – was posted to social media on the night the hero was killed and it showed how things unfolded, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The video showed the suspect running away from the corner where he had shot Deputy Calhoun and engaging in a gunfight with the second deputy who had just arrived on the scene.

The deputy and the suspect went around the patrol SUV and exchanged gunfire, the drone video showed.

The suspect collapsed on the sidewalk, wounded, and the video showed bystanders rushed the deputy who had just shot him.

The deputy pushed them away and they backed off and then ran to where the wounded suspect was on the ground just as more deputies arrived on the scene.

The deputies took the wounded suspect into custody and as two of the deputies put handcuffs on him, the second deputy to arrive on the scene went looking for Deputy Calhoun.

The drone video showed the deputy running down the street and turning the corner before he found Deputy Calhoun suffering from multiple gunshots wounds in the brush up against a house.

More deputies had arrived on the scene at that point and the video showed two deputies running full speed for the area where the fallen hero had been found.

The deputies appeared in the video to be providing First Aid to Deputy Calhoun initially and then quickly determined that he could not wait for an ambulance to arrive and rushed to get a patrol vehicle to transport the wounded deputy.

The drone video showed they pulled up two patrol vehicles closer to where the deputy had been shot and then several deputies carried Deputy Calhoun to the sheriff’s SUV.

The deputies stopped briefly and set the wounded hero down on the grass and then five deputies picked up Deputy Calhoun and carried him to the waiting SUV and put him inside it.

The drone footage showed a chaotic scene as deputies tried to pull the wounded deputy far enough into the vehicle to get the doors shut.

They rushed him to the hospital in serious condition.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition, CBS News reported.

Deputy Calhoun, 30, later died of his wounds at the hospital.

The deputy was the father of two- and four-year-old sons and his widow is pregnant, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“His family and serving the community were his world,” Riverside Sheriffs’ Association President Bill Young said. “Sadly now his unborn child must grow up without a devoted and loving father.”
