VIDEO: Cleveland Detective Shot By 17-Year-Old Gunman

Cleveland, OH – A manhunt is underway for a 17-year-old suspect accused of shooting a Cleveland police detective multiple times earlier this month (video below).

The brazen attack occurred in the 2300-block of Cedar Avenue at approximately 6:22 p.m. on March 14, WOIO reported.

The Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) said an officer spotted a Kia Forte with no license plates pulling into the Cedar Estates Apartments parking lot and that resulted in police approaching the vehicle to conduct an investigatory traffic stop.

That’s when four males bailed out of the Kia and took off running, WOIO reported.

The driverless Kia continued to move forward until it crashed into a pillar, according to police.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle, 17-year-old Jayrion Church, opened fire on 28-year-old Cleveland Police Detective Mark Bahrijczuk as he was getting out of his patrol vehicle, WOIO reported.

Bodycam footage showed Det. Bahrijczuk sending an alert out over the radio just before he was shot.

“Gun with a 50-round mag,” he said.

Investigators said Church fired four rounds at the detective from close range, hitting him in the thigh and arm, WOIO reported.

The teen then took off running through the apartment complex, according to police.

Bodycam footage showed Det. Bahrijczuk falling onto the street as he radioed for help.

“I’m shot! I’m shot!” he yelled. “Help!”

Additional officers arrived at the scene and applied a tourniquet to the wounded detective before they rushed him to a local hospital, WOIO.

Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Jeff Follmer said the officers’ quick thinking likely saved Det. Bahrijczuk’s life, according to WKYC.

A CDP zone car was responding to the shooting scene when it was involved in a crash at Carnegie and East 30th.

Two female officers, ages 52 and 49, were injured in the wreck and were transported to MetroHealth for treatment, WKYC.

Det. Bahrijczuk has been released from the hospital and is continuing his recovery at home, WOIO reported.

Investigators said they recovered three firearms at the shooting scene.

No suspects were immediately apprehended.

The CDP announced on Thursday that a warrant has been issued for Church’s arrest, WOIO reported.

They urged anyone with information about the attack to contact police immediately.
