Detroit, MI – Following protests demanding “justice” for a what activists claimed was an unarmed black man shot by police, Detroit PD released bodycam video showing the suspect firing a gun at officers (video below).
The newly-released video shows 20-year-old Hakim Littleton pull a gun out of his pocket and fire twice at an officer’s head.
The incident started at around 12:30 p.m. Friday as gang officers were conducting surveillance in the area of San Juan and McNichols.
The officers were investigating suspects believed to be connected to murders which occurred Fourth of July weekend, according to Detroit Free Press.
The officers observed Darnell Sylvester sitting in a vehicle, and they determined that he had an outstanding federal drug warrant.
While officers were arresting the fugitive, Littleton arrived on scene.
Bodycam video shows Littleton reached in his pocket and pulled out his gun.
Detroit PD Chief James Craig said that a witness heard Littleton say that he wasn’t going to let police take Sylvester, according to WDIV.
“(The suspect) then removed a blue-steel, .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol and began to fire several rounds at the officers over the shoulder,” Chief Craig told reporters Friday.
The video shows Littleton fire two shots directly at the head of an officer standing only a few feet away.
Both shots missed, and Chief Craig says that the officer immediately attempted to tackle Littleton.
“Despite being fired upon — and you saw it with your own eyes — he continued to advance,” Chief Craig said. “He doesn’t even have time to take out his weapon. He wanted to serve, putting his own life in jeopardy.”
The officers then returned fire and shot the suspect.
Littleton was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Sylvester was arrested and no officers were injured.
Shortly after the shooting, hundreds of activists arrived and started to heckle officers while demanding “justice” for the dead would-be cop-killer.
Officers equipped crowd-control gear and the mob started throwing objects at them.
Rumors were spread online by the activists that Detroit PD had killed an “unarmed” black man.

Craig reportedly has video that shows Littleton fired at police before he was gunned down. Protesters believe that Littleton was unarmed.
Activist group Detroit Will Breathe posted a call to action for activists to come protest, claiming that Littleton was “murdered” by police.
Chief Craig then released the video showing what actually happened.
