Corona, CA – A stabbing victim and a group of Good Samaritans disarmed a hatchet-wielding attacker inside a Planet Fitness on Tuesday and held him down until police arrived (video below).
The incident occurred at the Planet Fitness located at 3685 Grand Oaks at approximately 9:20 a.m. on March 14, the Corona Police Department (CPD) said in a press release later that day.
A 41-year-old man was out in the parking lot when he was suddenly attacked by a man carrying a hatchet and a knife, according to investigators.
Police said the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Roland Chand of Santa Ana, assaulted the victim and stabbed him multiple times in his upper body.
The victim and Chand soon wound up inside the Planet Fitness, where cell phone footage showed the bloodied victim and the suspect both holding onto the hatchet with their arms linked.
Chand was holding a knife in his left hand and waved it around wildly while demanding that someone get him some water.
When the suspect briefly turned his attention away from the victim at one point, the victim seized the opportunity to grab his attacker and took him to the ground, the video showed.
Multiple people jumped in and helped him by pinning the suspect to the floor.
The blood-soaked victim was rushed to a local hospital by emergency medical personnel and is expected to make a full recovery, KABC reported.
Chand was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries before he was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on an attempted murder charge, according to the CPD.
His bail was set at $1 million.
A motive for the attack was not immediately released.
