Tom GantertMiddletown, OH – An eight-year-old boy is being called a hero by police after he got his older sister out of car while both were in the back seat during a carjacking (video below).
The children were with their 69-year-old grandmother Nita Coburn on April 25 when the grandmother exited the car outside an entrance to a hospital to help a friend get inside, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The children were left in the backseat of the car.
Dalvir Singh is accused of entering the car about 10 seconds after the grandmother exited and trying to drive away with the children inside, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
“The little boy opened the door to escape and the little girl started to jump out also but the man grabbed the hoodie of the little girl not allowing her to leave,” police stated on the Middletown Police Department Facebook page.
“As she tried to get away, her little brother grabbed hold of her and pulled her away from the kidnapper and they both tumbled out of the vehicle as it was moving,” the department said.
Coburn was running alongside her car and didn’t know the 10-year-old sister and brother had escaped. The grandmother clung to the car until it accelerated and she fell off, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
There were police officers in the area who were able to stop Singh and arrest him. He was charged with two counts of kidnapping, felonious assault for dragging the grandmother and grand theft.
Police said that Singh is addicted to heroin, according to a posting on the police Facebook page.
“This little guy is a hero. No question,” said Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw in a statement. “He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety. That is incredible at his age.”
