Jersey City, NJ – Two police officers have been shot by at two gunmen in what law enforcement sources have described as an “ambush style” attack in Jersey City.
There were reports at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time that police had neutralized at least one of the gunmen but that has not yet been confirmed by officials who have continued to say the scene is still active and ongoing.
The incident began shortly before 12:20 p.m. on Dec. 10 at JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive and Bayview Avenue, the New York Daily News reported.
NJ.com reported that the gunmen arrived at the corner store in a U-Haul van and then each carried one gun inside.
Officials said there were reportedly two gunmen with rifles who are shooting at anyone on the street, and residents were urged to stay inside their homes and away from the windows as authorities worked to stop the shooters.
Police said in radio transmissions that the gunmen had fired a handful of shots at the nearby Sacred Heart School, the New York Daily News reported.
The suspects were also firing at any police officers who got near the store.
One officer was shot in the shoulder in front of the store.
WNBC reported that one of the wounded officers had been shot in the head.
Sources said that officers were waiting on a bearcat armored vehicle to get to one of the wounded officers, according to WNBC.
There were also scattered reports of multiple civilians who had been wounded but officials have not yet confirmed that information.
Police said in radio transmissions at 12:51 p.m. that it appeared someone had been shot inside the store, NJ.com reported.
The neighborhood where the incident occurred is a Hasidic Jewish community.
