Charlotte, NC – Officials have released video of the shooting of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CPMD) officer by a 14-year-old carjacking suspect in December of 2021 (video below).
The incident occurred on Dec. 27, 2021 when CMPD officers responded to a 911 call about a theft in progress from a vehicle in the 6100-block of Winged Elm Court, the City of Charlotte said in press release.
The 911 caller told the dispatcher that the suspect had pointed a gun at someone.
Bodycam video showed that when the first officer arrived on the scene, the suspect fled on foot.
Police did not know at the time that the armed suspect was a 14-year-old boy, according to the press release.
CMPD Officer Elliott Whitley’s bodycam video showed he pursued the teen on foot and ordered him to stop multiple times during the foot chase through the apartment complex.
“Let me see your f-king hands,” Officer Whitley yelled at the suspect as he chased him.
But the suspect kept running, the video showed.
“Go to the f-king ground,” the officer yelled at the fleeing suspect. “I’m not playing with you. I’m not f-king playing, bro. Get on the f-king ground!”
The video showed that was when the suspect ran off the sidewalk onto the grass.
Then he spun and faced Officer Whitley with a gun in his hand and opened fire.
The officer returned fire as he fell to the ground wounded, the video showed.
Officer Whitley was shot in the shoulder, according to the press release.
The video showed the officer’s gun jammed and he cleared it and continued to fire at the armed suspect who had just shot him.
The suspect continued to run and fled toward a heavily populated apartment complex with his gun in his hand, the press release said.
Other officers arrived on the scene and were able to apprehend the 14-year-old suspect and take him into custody.
Officer Whitley was transported to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound, WBTV reported.
They were unable to remove the bullet, but he has since recovered.
Bodycam video at the scene showed the law enforcement officer was more concerned about the armed suspect who had shot him than his own medical condition after the shooting.
The wounded hero is a 10-year veteran of the police force.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident, WBTV reported.
The barely-teenage gunman was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, WSOC reported.
“The shows you just how quick things escalate,” Charlotte Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Dan Redford said. “Why this 14-year-old has a gun in the first place is beyond me. Why he tried to kill a cop this day, those are the questions that I think need to be asked.”
Redford pointed out the suspect opened fire on the officer first, WSOC reported.
“This officer could have been murdered, and people are more concerned about what the officer said, not what this juvenile did,” the union boss said.
CMPD conducted an internal investigation of the officer-involved shooting and found that all of Officer Whitley’s actions that day had fallen within police department policy, WSOC reported.
