URGENT: Deputy Murdered – Blue Alert Issued For Gunman

A search is underway for Steven Wiggins, who shot a Dickson County deputy early Wednesday morning.

Dickson County, TN – A Dickson County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.

The deputy, whom the sheriff’s department has not yet identified, attempted to stop a driver for operating a vehicle with expired registration at approximately 7 a.m., but the driver refused to pull over, WKRN reported.

During the brief pursuit that ensued, the deputy and the suspect exchanged gunfire near the boundary line between Dickson and Hickman counties.

The deputy was fatally shot in the gunfight.

The suspect, identified as Steven Wiggins, fled the scene, and was believed to be in the area near Bear Creek Valley Road and Tidwell Switch, the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police said that Wiggins should be considered armed and dangerous, and warned residents to remain alert, WTVF reported.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has dispatched agents to the densely wooded area.
