Two Officers Shoot Each Other In Fight With Armed Felon

Elk Grove, CA – Two Elk Grove police officers accidentally shot each other when they opened fire on an armed felon on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 pm on April 20 when a neighbor called police to report someone messing with an RV trailer parked near their house on Tegan Road, KCRA reported.

The caller told the 911 dispatcher that the person was pulling on the doors of the RV and that they saw him move a gun from his pants to his sweatshirt, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Officers responded to the scene and found a man and a woman there, and told them to sit on the curb.

But when another officer arrived on the scene, the male suspect took off running, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Elk Grove police officers chased the man both on foot and with their police vehicle, and caught him at a nearby strip mall, according to a press release put out by their police department.

The officers were standing on either side of the suspect when he lunged at one of them with “his hands near his midsection area,” the Sacramento Bee reported.

Both officers opened fire on the suspect, and both officers shot the suspect and the other officer.

Elk Grove Police Department Spokesman Jason Jimenez said the suspect did not shoot at the officers although he was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Both officers sustained gunshot wounds to their lower legs. They were transported to the hospital and later released.

The suspect was also transported to a hospital and survived his wounds, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Police have only identified the suspect as a 41-year-old Sacramento man thus far, but they said he would be booked into the Sacramento Main Jail when he is released from the hospital.

The suspect is facing charges of being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm and resisting arrest, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Both wounded officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
