Corpus Christi, TX – Aransas Pass police officials have confirmed that the teen fatally shot by Corpus Christi police after a hit-and-run crash on Tuesday was the same student who caused campuses to be locked down after someone reported that he had brought a gun to school.
Aransas Pass Independent School District (ISD) put all campuses into a three-hour lockdown at about 1 p.m. on Nov. 2, KIII reported.
“We received a report of a student on the high school property that was armed with a firearm,” Aransas Pass Police Chief Eric Blanchard said. “Now, he wasn’t using it, didn’t shoot it, didn’t hurt nobody but was supposedly carrying a weapon.”
Police said officers searched the campus of Aransas Pass High School for the student and found him.
Chief Blanchard said police searched his belongings and found “a controlled substance” in the student’s backpack, the Sacramento Bee reported.
But before police could finish searching the teen boy, he grabbed his backpack and fled the campus, according to the police chief.
Because the student’s motives and destination were unknown, Aransas Pass ISD placed all the schools in the district on lockdown, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Just before 3 p.m. the same day, Corpus Christi police responded to a major crash on Crosstown near Trojan Drive, KIII reported.
Corpus Christi police said a wrong-way vehicle slammed head-on into another vehicle on Highway 286, the Sacramento Bee reported.
The driver who caused the wreck fled the scene on foot.
Officers searched the surrounding neighborhood and eventually spotted a person matching the suspect’s description in the area, KIII reported.
Police said the suspect started shooting at officers and the officers returned fire.
The suspect was shot during the gunfight, KIII reported.
He was transported to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead.
Officers recovered the suspect’s gun at the scene, KIII reported.
Authorities have confirmed that the armed student who caused lockdown of the Aransas Pass ISD was the same driver who crashed and then died in a gunfight with police.
“By all accounts, the suspect in our case is the same individual involved in the officer involved shooting with Corpus Christi Police Officers yesterday afternoon,” Aransas Pass police posted to their social media channels, according to the Sacramento Bee.
