‘Teacher Of The Year’ Arrested For Sexual Abuse Of Student In Classroom

Randi Chaverria has been charged with having performed oral sex twice on a male student in her classroom.

Round Rock, TX – The Round Rock Independent School District’s 2019 Secondary Teacher of the Year has been charged with sex crimes after performing oral sex on a male student in her classroom.

An arrest affidavit said that the 36-year-old Randi Chaverria had performed oral sex on the student at least twice around Oct. 16 in her classroom at Round Rock High School, KSAT reported.

The student showed investigators a series of text messages between himself and Chaverria that were “consistent with statements made” to police.

She was arrested on Nov. 19, KSAT reported.

The felony complaint alleged that Chaverria engaged in “sexual contact or deviate sexual intercourse” with a student where she worked.

Round Rock High School Principal Matt Groff told investigators that the Family and Consumer Science teacher turned herself in to administrators after they became aware of the allegations, KXAN reported.

“Once notified, the teacher, who had elected to take leave before administration received the report, was immediately reported to the District’s Human Resources Department and law enforcement and not permitted to return to campus,” the principal said in the letter that went out to parents.

Groff said Chaverria resigned on Nov. 19.

He also said the district had reported the incident to the State Board for Educator Certification, KXAN reported.

“Safety is the top priority of Round Rock High School and Round Rock ISD. Ensuring a safe and secure learning environment requires partnership between students, parents, campus and district staff, as well as law enforcement,” Groff wrote in the letter.

The school district said that Chaverria, who had been teaching for Round Rock ISD for six years, had passed a Texas Department of Public Safety background check when she was hired, KXAN reported.

She has been charged with the second-degree felony of an improper relationship between an educator and a student.

Chaverria beat out 20 other candidates to be named high school teacher of the year for the school district in May of 2019, KXAN reported.
