Sheriff: Deputy Jacob Pickett Has Non-Survivable Gunshot Wounds

Boone County, IN – The Boone County Sheriff announced Friday afternoon that Deputy Jacob Pickett will not survive his injures after he was shot in the line of duty hours earlier.

The shooting happened when Lebanon Police Department (LPD) officers spotted the subject of a warrant at approximately 8:30 a.m., but the suspect and two other individuals fled the area in a vehicle, WXIN reported.

The LPD pursued the suspect, and were soon joined by a deputy from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

“It turned into a foot pursuit at some point, at which point the Boone County Deputy was shot,” an Indiana State Police (ISP) Sergeant Perrine told WXIN. The deputy was shot at 9:39 a.m., he said.

He was rushed to a local hospital, and was then flown by medial ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

He is listed in critical condition, but will not survive, according to the sheriff.

The pursuit resumed after the deputy was shot, and officers were eventually able to stop the fleeing vehicle on I-65, WXIN. The lone occupant was taken into custody.

All three of the individuals involved in the incident are “accounted for” and in custody, the Sgt. Perrine said.

One of the suspects was shot during the altercation with police, but his condition was not known. ISP said they did also not know whether or not the injured suspect was the subject of the original warrant.

One of the individuals, John Baldwin Sr., “gave himself up” to officers, ISP confirmed.

Baldwin has two prior felony theft convictions, WXIN reported.

“It’s gut wrenching. It rips all our hearts out when this happens,” Sgt. Perrine said. “Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the family and everybody but we’re gonna keep working, we’re gonna keep working.”

ISP will head the ongoing investigation, and is working with numerous other agencies in the area, Sgt. Perrine said.
