New York, NY – A retired New York police detective was shot by gang members while walking to work in Harlem on Tuesday morning, according to police sources.
Retired New York Police Department (NYPD) Detective Terence Felder was walking near Lenox Avenue and West 125th Street on his way to his job as an investigative consultant for New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services when the attack occurred at approximately 6:55 a.m. on Oct. 4, the New York Daily News reported.
Police sources said two gang members were walking down the block when they spotted three rival gang members, according to the news outlet.
Gunfire erupted a moment later.
Police sources said at least three shooters fired a total of approximately nine rounds during the confrontation, the New York Daily News reported.
A 21-year-old man who was targeted in the attack was transported to Harlem Hospital with a graze wound to his neck.
He allegedly refused to speak with investigators after the shooting.
Felder, 60, was hit in the abdomen and elbow by stray bullets, the New York Daily News reported.
A security guard who witnessed the attack and called 911 said the retired detective immediately got back onto his feet, despite his wounds.
“When he fell, he jumped right back up,” the security guard told the New York Daily News. “Right back up. He didn’t stay down at all. I didn’t even think he was shot. I couldn’t tell where he was hit.”
The retired detective was also rushed to Harlem Hospital, where doctors treated him for a gunshot wound to his chest, his wife told the news outlet.
“He’s gonna be fine,” she said, according to the New York Daily News. “He still has a bullet lodged in his arm. He was shot in his chest, and it came out his side.”
Felder was released from the hospital Tuesday evening and was continuing his recovery at home, according to the New York Post.
He served with the NYPD’s 24th Precinct prior to his retirement in 2006, the New York Daily News reported.
Police sources said the gang member who was injured in the attack has four prior arrests and lives in the Bronx.
Police had been looking for him in connection with an unrelated drug and assault offense.
The suspects involved in the shooting fled the scene on foot, WCBS reported.
They were not immediately identified.
The NYPD released photos and security footage on Tuesday showing two alleged gang members who they believe were involved in the shooting.
