Rowan County, KY – Rowan County Deputy Baker Hollis was shot on Sunday while responding to a call. Three other people are dead from the same incident.

BY COWGIRL

Rowan County Deputies responded to a disturbance between a man and a woman at a residence on Island Fork Rd. in Morehead at around 4 PM. Upon arrival, Rowan County Deputy Baker Hollis was approaching the house from the woods, taking cover behind a large oak tree. A male suspect inside of the residence shot Deputy Hollis in the hand and then barricaded himself in the residence.

The Kentucky State Police were called about 6 PM to assist with the barricaded suspect, according to WSAZ News Channel 3. The residence was set on fire shortly afterward by the suspect inside the residence.  Three people were found dead inside the home after the fire was put out.  The suspect apparently shot and killed his mother and his girlfriend before he called 911, and then shot himself during the barricaded situation.

Matt Sparks, Rowan County Sheriff, said the suspected shooter had called 911 saying he’d shot his girlfriend, according to WKYT.  He also said “It’s tragic. It goes back to, you know, some officers were talking at the scene this person is known to have some mental health issues and it just seems like there’s so much of that going on in our country right now and our county,”

Rowan County Deputy Baker Hollis was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  No other Deputies or Officers were injured.  During the incident, a section of Island Fork Road off of KY-99 was closed.  The names of the suspect and the two female victims have not yet been released.  The investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Deputy Baker Hollis and his family, both blood and blue. Thank you for your bravery and courage in this situation.
