Protests Erupt In Portland Immediately After Police Shooting Of White Man Allegedly Pointing Gun

Portland, OR – Protesters gathered near Lents Park to denounce an officer-involved shooting that took place there on Friday morning.

The white male suspect died of his gunshot wounds, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.

The incident occurred near Southeast Holgate Street and Southeast 92nd Avenue at approximately 9:30 a.m. after Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to a “suspicious circumstance involving a weapon,” PPB Sergeant Kevin Allen said.

The suspect was allegedly pointing a gun in the park.

The department put out a press release shortly thereafter announcing that the streets surrounding the area of the shooting had been closed down.

The officer-involved shooting occurred inside an area that is generally overseen by the city’s recently enacted, non-police program called Portland Street Response, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.

The unit is tasked with helping people who are dealing with mental health crises or homelessness.

“Generally, the Street Response folks would respond to things where there was not a weapon involved,” Sgt. Allen told reporters. “That’s part of their standard operating procedure.”

Details regarding the events preceding the shooting have not been released.

No information has been released regarding the person who was shot.

No officers were injured during the incident, KOIN reported.

Protesters flocked to the scene to scream at police shortly after the officer-involved shooting occurred, videos posted to social media showed.

Mobs of people yelled at officers to quit their jobs, accused them of killing “black people,” and called them racists and various vulgar names, videos showed. The activists also attacked a journalist.

“We’re sick and tired of you murdering people!” one woman with a bullhorn yelled. “Quit your f—king job! You’re sick and disgusting! You’re f—king filthy animals! You are a murderer!”

Another video showed members of the group screaming at Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler when he showed up at the scene, reporter Andy Ngo said.

Protesters squared off with and taunted police while drumming and chanting “Black Lives Matter,” a livestream from the scene showed.
